Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for many nosocomial infections. This bacterium uses Quorum Sensing (QS) to generate antimicrobial resistance (AMR) so its disruption is considered a novel approach. The current study describes the antibiofilm and QS inhibitory potential of extract and chemical components from Piper pertomentellum . The methodo- logy included the phytochemical study on the aerial part of the species, the determination of QS inhibition efficacy on Chromobacterium violaceum and the evaluation of the effect on biofilm formation and virulence factors on P. aeruginosa . The phytochemical study led to the isolation and identification of a new piperamide (ethyltembamide 1 ), together with four known amides (tembamide acetate 2 , cepharadione B 3 , benzamide 4 and tembamide 5 ). The results indicated that the ethanolic extract and some fractions reduced violacein production in C. violaceum , however, only the ethanolic extract caused inhibition of biofilm formation of P. aeruginosa on polystyrene microtiter plates. Finally, the investigation determined that molecules ( 1 - 5 ) inhibited the formation of biofilms (50% approximately), while compounds 2 - 4 can inhibit pyocyanin and elastase production (30-50% approximately). In this way, the study contributes to the determination of the potential of extract and chemical constituents from P pertomentellum to regulate the QS system in P. aeruginosa .

Rutaceae is a large family, and the genus-level classification in the subfamilies or tribes of this family is not unified based on different taxonomic treatments. Until now, phylogenetic relationships of some genera in traditional tribe Ruteae have not been clearly resolved. In this study, seven new complete plastomes of this tribe were sequenced, and a comparative analysis was performed to investigate their plastome characteristics and evolution. In addition, we inferred the phylogenetic relationships of Ruteae based on complete plastome and nuclear ITS data. All plastomes exhibited a typical quadripartite structure and were relatively conserved in their structure and gene arrangement. Their genome sizes ranged from 154,656 bp to 160,677 bp, and the size variation was found to be associated with differences in IR expansion and gene loss. A total of 112 to 114 genes were identified in the genomes, including 78 to 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, 4 rRNA genes, and 2 pseudogenes. Sequence divergence analysis indicated that non-coding regions exhibited a higher percentage of variable characters, and nine non-coding and six coding regions were identified as divergent hotspots. Phylogenetic results based on different datasets showed that this tribe was divided into three reciprocally exclusive groups. The phylogenetic analyses between plastome and nuclear ITS data were partly incongruent with each other. This study provides new insights into plastome evolution of Ruteae as well as Rutaceae. The availability of these plastomes provides useful genomic resources for molecular DNA barcodes and phylogenetically informative markers and deepens our understanding of the phylogeny in Ruteae.

Adverse effects and drug resistance to the current onchopharmacologicals have increased the demand for alternative novel therapeutics. We herein introduce justicidin B, an arylnaphthalen lignan isolated from different plant origins, especially Justicia, Phyllanthus, Haplophyllum and Linum species. This cyclolignan exhibits a wide array of biological properties ranges from piscicidal to antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial activities. Activity against Trypanosoma brucei makes justicidin B a potential antiprotozoal agent for the treatment of neglected tropical diseases. Pharmacological properties like antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory and bone resorption inhibition have been also attributed to justicidin B. This compound is a potent cytotoxic substance on several cell lines, especially chronic myeloid and chronic lymphoid leukemia. Pharmacological values, natural variation, as well as biotechnological production of justicidin B by plant cell, tissue and organ culture are also described in this review. Chemical characteristics and chromatographic methods to identify justicidin B and its biosynthetic pathway have been discussed. Different approaches to the total synthesis of justicidin B are compared. This review would shed light on the role of justicidin B as an intriguing natural compound and provides a chance to optimize conditions for industrial applications.
