The fungus Trichoderma is widely regarded as the most common fungal biocontrol agent for plant health management. More than 25 Trichoderma species have been extensively studied and have demonstrated significant potential in inhibiting not only phytopathogen growth but also insect pest infestations. In addition to their use as biopesticides, there is increasing evidence that several Trichoderma species can function as fungal endophytes by colonizing the tissues of specific plants. This colonization enhances a plant's growth and improves its tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses. In recent decades, there has been a proliferation of literature on the role of Trichoderma endophytes in crop protection. Although the mechanisms underlying plant-fungal endophyte interactions are not yet fully understood, several studies have suggested their potential application in agriculture, particularly in the mitigation of plant pests and diseases. This review focuses on the diversity of Trichoderma endophytic strains and their potential use in controlling specific diseases and pests of crop plants. Trichoderma endophytes are considered a potential solution to reduce production costs and environmental impact by decreasing reliance on agrochemicals.

Background Myanmar is one of the hotspots of biodiversity and is a rapidly developing country. Performing floristic research in Myanmar is an urgent issue, and ethnobotanical studies of wild edible plants (WEPs) will provide new information on natural plant resources. Method Ethnobotanical data were collected in three villages with different historical backgrounds in Southern Shan State, Myanmar. A total of 19 key informants were interviewed, and specimens were collected in the fields with the participation of key informants in June-July 2015. Group discussions were organized during 2016 and 2017 to reinforce the information on use of WEPs. DNA barcoding was used to facilitate species identification. Results A total of 83 species from 44 families of angiosperms were recorded as WEPs. Most of the species were used as wild vegetables (47 species), followed by fruits and nuts (31 species). Eighteen WEPs were consumed as medicinal foods. Differences in use of WEPs between the communities of the villages were observed. The age class of 30-39 years was more familiar with the environments where they could collect WEPs and had more knowledge of WEPs than did the older groups. The use of Elaeocarpus floribundus as an edible oil is a very interesting tradition. Conclusion WEPs play an important role in the livelihood of local communities. The indigenous society has maintained traditional knowledge of the WEPs. Historical background, land use system and surrounding vegetation could have effects on the variation in the traditional uses of WEPs. Increasing awareness of the importance of WEPs will encourage the conservation of traditional knowledge of indigenous populations.

Dimocarpus longan, commonly known as the longan, belongs to the family Sapindaceae, and is one of the most economically important fruits commonly cultivated in several regions in Asia. There are various cultivars of longan throughout the Thai-Malay peninsula region, but until now no phylogenetic analysis has been undertaken to determine the genetic relatedness of these cultivars. To address this issue, 6 loci, namely ITS2, matK, rbcL, trnH-psbA, trnL-I and trnL-trnF were amplified and sequenced from 40 individuals consisting of 26 longan cultivars 2 types of lychee and 8 herbarium samples. The sequencing results were used to construct a phylogenetic tree using the neighbor-joining (NJ), maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) criteria. The tree showed cryptic groups of D. longan from the Thailand-Malaysia region (Dimocarpus longan spp.). This is the first report of the genetic relationship of Dimocarpus based on multi-locus molecular markers and morphological characteristics. Multiple sequence alignments, phylogenetic trees and species delimitation support that Dimocarpus longan spp. longan var. obtusus and Dimocarpus longan spp. malesianus var. malesianus should be placed into a higher order and are two additional species in the genus Dimocarpus. Therefore these two species require nomenclatural changes as Dimocarpus malesianus and Dimocarpus obtusus, respectively.

Rhamnose containing chemicals (RCCs) are widely occurred in plants and bacteria and are known to possess important bioactivities. However, few of them were available using the enzymatic synthesis method because of the scarcity of the α-L-rhamnosidases with wide acceptor specificity. In this work, an α-L-rhamnosidase from Alternaria sp. L1 was expressed in Pichia pastroris strain GS115. The recombinant enzyme was purified and used to synthesize novel RCCs through reverse hydrolysis in the presence of rhamnose as donor and mannitol, fructose or esculin as acceptors. The effects of initial substrate concentrations, reaction time, and temperature on RCC yields were investigated in detail when using mannitol as the acceptor. The mannitol derivative achieved a maximal yield of 36.1% by incubation of the enzyme with 0.4 M L-rhamnose and 0.2 M mannitol in pH 6.5 buffers at 55°C for 48 h. In identical conditions except for the initial acceptor concentrations, the maximal yields of fructose and esculin derivatives reached 11.9% and 17.9% respectively. The structures of the three derivatives were identified to be α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6')-D-mannitol, α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→1')-β-D-fructopyranose, and 6,7-dihydroxycoumarin α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6')-β-D-glucopyranoside by ESI-MS and NMR spectroscopy. The high glycosylation efficiency as well as the broad acceptor specificity of this enzyme makes it a powerful tool for the synthesis of novel rhamnosyl glycosides.

The ethanolic extract from the stem bark of Dimocarpus fumatus, showed in vitro cytotoxic activity against KB cells. Fractionation of the extract gave compounds belonging to different classes. The two major components have been identified as a benzoquinone, sargaquinone, and a chromene, sargaol. One sphingolipid, soyacerebroside I, two glycosides of sitosterol, and fatty acids were also identified. Besides these known compounds, two new glycosides of long-chain fatty alcohols have been identified as 1-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-beta-D- glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D- glucopyranosyl]hexadecanol and 1-O-[[alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 -->2)- beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D- glucopyranosyl] hexadecanol, and a mixture of three new diacylglycerylglucosides has been isolated. These structures were elucidated by analysis of 2D-NMR and mass spectra.
