Monostroma (Ulotrichales, Chlorophyta) is the most intensively cultivated genus among green seaweeds, accounting for over 90% of total green algal cultivation. It is commonly found in the eulittoral zones of marine and estuarine habitats, thus contributing significantly to the ecology of the coastal ecosystem. Morphologically, the frond of Monostroma is blade-like with eponymous one-cell thickness; therefore, it is also known as "Slender sea lettuce". Monostroma nitidum is often used for salad ingredients, boiled tsukudani, soups, etc., due to its health benefits. Monostroma kuroshiense is commercially cultivated in East Asia and South America for the edible product "hitoegusa-nori" or "hirohano-hitoegusa nori", popular sushi wraps. This genus remains one of the well-studied seaweed genera for ecophysiology, habitat-dependent seasonality of its growth pattern, gametangial ontogeny and phylogenetics. Moreover, rhamnan sulfate (RS), a sulfated polysaccharide, is the main component of the fiber extracted from M. nitidum and studied for various biological activities. This review presents the taxonomy, morphology, anatomy, life history, distribution, ecology, physiology, cultivation and harvesting, chemical composition, and biotechnological applications of this genus.

This paper presents the alkaloids found in green, brown and red marine algae. Algal chemistry has interested many researchers in order to develop new drugs, as algae include compounds with functional groups which are characteristic from this particular source. Among these compounds, alkaloids present special interest because of their pharmacological activities. Alkaloid chemistry has been widely studied in terrestrial plants, but the number of studies in algae is insignificant. In this review, a detailed account of macro algae alkaloids with their structure and pharmacological activities is presented. The alkaloids found in marine algae may be divided into three groups: 1. Phenylethylamine alkaloids, 2. Indole and halogenated indole alkaloids, 3. Other alkaloids.

Thirty-four species of marine macroalgae from around St. Andrews, Scotland, have been assayed for their external activity and thirty-three species for their total activity of carbonic anhydrase. Activity was detected in all the Rhodophyta tested apart from Chondrus crispus, but was absent in Codium fragile, Enteromorpha sp. and Monostroma fuscum (Chlorophyta), and Alaria esculenta, Laminaria digitata, L. saccharina and L. hyperborea (Phaeophyta). Total activity of carbonic anhydrase per unit fresh weight tended to be higher in the Rhodophyta than in the Chlorophyta or Phaeophyta. External activity was present in two of the six Chlorophyta, four of the twelve Phaeophyta and four of the sixteen Rhodophyta tested. On average, when present, external carbonic anhydrase activity represented 2.7% of the total activity. A relationship was found between total carbonic anhydrase activity and habitat. Species from the high intertidal and the low-light subtidal habitats had significantly higher activity than species from the mid and low intertidal, rockpools, or high-light region of the subtidal. External carbonic anhydrase activity did not vary significantly with habitat. There appeared to be no strong relationship between carbonic anhydrase activity and the ability of a species to use HCO - 3 in photosynthesis under water.

Results of the study of Monostroma fuscum from Son Juan Island, Washington, fully support the separation of the species M. fuscum from Monostroma sensu Wittrock into a taxon including M. obscurum. It would appear from this and previous studies that the M. obscunim-M. fuscum complex is clearly Ulvacean. The characteristics of the complex include (1) alternation of morphologically similar haploid and diploid generations; (2) production of biflagellate gametes and quadriflagellate zoospores; (3) a uniseriate form in early ontogeny; (4) thallus development progressing through a vesicular stage that, as a result of localized degenerative processes, opens at a size of less than I cm into a monostromatic blade; (5) cells elongated perpendicular to the plane of the thallus and with rotund-truncate ends: (6) a single elongate plastid, thickened at the opposite poles of the cell and thinner in the equatorial region of the cell; (7) a thallus composed of cells with relatively inelastic walls; and (8) discrete discharge pores. The chromosome number of Monostroma fuscum is n =9. The first division of the zoosporangium nucleus is meiosis I.
