Medicinal plants are the chief components in the different oriental formulations in different traditional medical systems worldwide. As a thriving source of medicine, the medicinal plants with antituberculosis (TB) properties inspire the pharmacists to develop new drugs based on their active components or semimetabolites. In the present review, the anti-TB medicinal plants were screened from the scientific literatures, based on the botanical classification and the anti-TB activity. The obtained anti-TB medicinal plants were categorized into three different categories, viz. , 159 plants critically examined with a total 335 isolated compounds, 131 plants with their crude extracts showing anti-TB activity, and 27 plants in literature with the prescribed formula by the traditional healers. Our systemic analysis on the medicinal plants can assist the discovery of novel and more efficacious anti-TB drugs.

Terpenoids with lactone moieties have been indicated to possess high bioactivity. Certain terpenoid lactones exist in nature, in plants and animals, but they can also be obtained by chemical synthesis. Terpenoids possessing lactone moieties are known for their cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, and antimalarial activities. Moreover, one terpenoid lactone, artemisinin, is used as a drug against malaria. Because of these abilities, there is constant interest in new terpenoid lactones that are both isolated and synthesized, and their biological activities have been verified. In some cases, the activity of the terpenoid lactone is specifically connected to the lactone moiety. Recent works have revealed that new terpenoid lactones can demonstrate such functions and are thus considered to be potential active agents against many diseases.

Antivirals are compounds used since the 1960s that can interfere with viral development. Some of these antivirals can be isolated from a variety of sources, such as animals, plants, bacteria or fungi, while others must be obtained by chemical synthesis, either designed or random. Antivirals display a variety of mechanisms of action, and while some of them enhance the animal immune system, others block a specific enzyme or a particular step in the viral replication cycle. As viruses are mandatory intracellular parasites that use the host's cellular machinery to survive and multiply, it is essential that antivirals do not harm the host. In addition, viruses are continually developing new antiviral resistant strains, due to their high mutation rate, which makes it mandatory to continually search for, or develop, new antiviral compounds. This review describes natural and synthetic antivirals in chronological order, with an emphasis on natural compounds, even when their mechanisms of action are not completely understood, that could serve as the basis for future development of novel and/or complementary antiviral treatments.

Covering: 2006 to 2013. Investigations on the chemistry and biology of rocaglamide, silvestrol and structurally related bioactive compounds from Aglaia species during the period 2006-2013 are reviewed. Included are new phytochemical studies of naturally occurring rocaglamide derivatives, an update on synthetic methods for cyclopenta[b]benzofurans, and a description of the recent biological evaluation and mechanism-of-action studies on compounds of this type.

Three structurally complex flavaglines of the cyclopenta[bc]benzopyran type, named desacetylpyramidaglains A, C, D (1-3), and the triterpene 23, 24, 25-trihydroxycycloartan-3-one (4) were isolated from the leaves of Aglaia forbesii together with the two rare pregnane steroids 2beta,3beta-dihydroxy-5alpha-pregn-17(Z)-en-16-one and 2beta,3beta-dihydroxy-5alpha-pregn-17(E)-en-16-one, as well as the bisamide pyramidatine, the sesquiterpene spathulenol, and the widespread triterpenoids lupeol, lupenone, and a mixture of beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Compounds 3, 4, 5, and 6 were tested for antituberculosis and antiviral activity.
