Natural ingredients have been used for centuries for skin treatment and care. Interest in the health effects of plants has recently increased due to their safety and applicability in the formulation of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Long-known plant materials as well as newly discovered ones are increasingly being used in natural products of plant origin. This review highlights the beneficial effects of plants and plant constituents on the skin, including moisturizing (e.g., Cannabis sativa , Hydrangea serrata , Pradosia mutisii and Carthamus tinctorius ), anti-aging (e.g., Aegopodium podagraria , Euphorbia characias , Premna odorata and Warburgia salutaris ), antimicrobial (e.g., Betula pendula and Epilobium angustifolium ), antioxidant (e.g., Kadsura coccinea , Rosmarinus officinalis , Rubus idaeus and Spatholobus suberectus ), anti-inflammatory (e.g., Antidesma thwaitesianum , Helianthus annuus , Oenanthe javanica , Penthorum chinense , Ranunculus bulumei and Zanthoxylum bungeanum ), regenerative (e.g., Aloe vera , Angelica polymorpha , Digitaria ciliaris , Glycyrrihza glabra and Marantodes pumilum ), wound healing (e.g., Agrimonia eupatoria , Astragalus floccosus , Bursera morelensis , Jatropha neopauciflora and Sapindus mukorossi ), photoprotective (e.g., Astragalus gombiformis , Calea fruticose , Euphorbia characias and Posoqueria latifolia ) and anti-tyrosinase activity (e.g., Aerva lanata , Bruguiera gymnorhiza , Dodonaea viscosa , Lonicera japonica and Schisandra chinensis ), as well as their role as excipients in cosmetics (coloring (e.g., Beta vulgaris , Centaurea cyanus , Hibiscus sabdariffa and Rubia tinctiorum ), protective and aromatic agents (e.g., Hyssopus officinalis , Melaleuca alternifolia , Pelargonium graveolens and Verbena officinalis )).

Kadsua coccinea (K. coccinea) has long been used as a fruit and folk medicine; however, the composition of its leaves and the activities of its constituents have been seldom studied. A total of 98 chemical constituents, including 53 phenolic acids, 41 flavonoids, and 4 lignans, were identified from the plant of kadsua coccinea by UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap Mass spectrometry. All these chemicals were reported for the first time in leaves, and 95 of them have been reported for the first time in the plant of kadsua coccinea. The biological potential of extracts of K. coccinea leaves (EKL) was evaluated by in vitro antioxidant assay and anti-inflammatory assay. EKL are composed of polysaccharides (60%), polyphenols (26%), and proteins (11%). EKL present decent potent •OH and DPPH scavenging abilities and Fe 2+ chelating ability. They also inhibit the secretion of NO, reduce the level of Cox2 in proteins, inhibit the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-2 and IL-6, and promote the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. These results displayed significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of EKL, which will be very beneficial for further development and investigation of kadsua coccinea leaves.

Anthocyanins are colored valuable biocompounds, of which extraction increases globally, although functional applications are restrained by their limited environmental stability. Temperature is a critical parameter of food industrial processing that impacts on the food matrix, particularly affecting heat-sensitive compounds such as anthocyanins. Due to the notable scientific progress in the field of thermal stability of anthocyanins, an analytical and synthetic integration of published data is required. This review focuses on the molecular mechanisms and the kinetic parameters of anthocyanin degradation during heating, both in extracts and real food matrices. Several kinetic models (Arrhenius, Eyring, Ball) of anthocyanin degradation were studied. Crude extracts deliver more thermally stable anthocyanins than purified ones. A different anthocyanin behavior pattern within real food products subjected to thermal processing has been observed due to interactions with some nutrients (proteins, polysaccharides). The most recent studies on the stabilization of anthocyanins by linkages to other molecules using classical and innovative methods are summarized. Ensuring appropriate thermal conditions for processing anthocyanin-rich food will allow a rational design for the future development of stable functional products, which retain these bioactive molecules and their functionalities to a great extent.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are two typical neurodegenerative diseases that increased with aging. With the emergence of aging population, the health problem and economic burden caused by the two diseases also increase. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases/protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) signaling pathway regulates signal transduction and biological processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis and metabolism. According to reports, it regulates neurotoxicity and mediates the survival of neurons through different substrates such as forkhead box protein Os (FoxOs), glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β), and caspase-9. Accumulating evidences indicate that some natural products can play a neuroprotective role by activating PI3K/AKT pathway, providing an effective resource for the discovery of potential therapeutic drugs. This article reviews the relationship between AKT signaling pathway and AD and PD, and discusses the potential natural products based on the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway to treat two diseases in recent years, hoping to provide guidance and reference for this field. Further development of Chinese herbal medicine is needed to treat these two diseases.

Dietary guidelines universally advise adherence to plant-based diets. Plant-based foods confer considerable health benefits, partly attributable to their abundant micronutrient (e.g., polyphenol) content. Interest in polyphenols is largely focused on the contribution of their antioxidant activity to the prevention of various disorders, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Polyphenols are classified into groups, such as stilbenes, flavonoids, phenolic acids, lignans and others. Lignans, which possess a steroid-like chemical structure and are defined as phytoestrogens, are of particular interest to researchers. Traditionally, health benefits attributed to lignans have included a lowered risk of heart disease, menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis and breast cancer. However, the intake of naturally lignan-rich foods varies with the type of diet. Consequently, based on the latest humans' findings and gathered information on lignan-rich foods collected from Phenol Explorer database this review focuses on the potential health benefits attributable to the consumption of different diets containing naturally lignan-rich foods. Current evidence highlight the bioactive properties of lignans as human health-promoting molecules. Thus, dietary intake of lignan-rich foods could be a useful way to bolster the prevention of chronic illness, such as certain types of cancers and cardiovascular disease.
