The Spike (S) protein of SARS-CoV-2 expressed on the viral cell surface is of particular importance as it facilitates viral entry into the host cells. The S protein is heavily glycosylated with 22 N-glycosylation sites and a few N-glycosylation sites. During the viral surface protein synthesis via the host ribosomal machinery, glycosylation is an essential step in post-translational modifications (PTMs) and consequently vital for its life cycle, structure, immune evasion, and cell infection. Interestingly, the S protein of SARS-CoV-2 and the host receptor protein, ACE2, are also extensively glycosylated and these surface glycans are critical for the viral-host cell interaction for viral entry. The glycosylation pathway of both virus (hijacked from the host biosynthetic machinery) and target cells crucially affect SARS-CoV-2 infection at different levels. For example, the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) of host cells serve as a cofactor as they interact with the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of S-glycoprotein and play a protective role in host immune evasion via masking the viral peptide epitopes. Hence, the post-translational glycan biosynthesis, processing, and transport events could be potential targets for developing therapeutic drugs and vaccines. Especially, inhibition of the N-glycan biosynthesis pathway amplifies S protein proteolysis and, thus, blocks viral entry. The chemical inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 glycosylation could be evaluated for Covid-19. In this review, we discuss the current status of the chemical inhibitors (both natural and synthetically designed inhibitors) of viral glycosylation for Covid-19 and provide a future perspective. It could be an important strategy in targeting the various emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs), as these inhibitors are postulated to aid in reducing the viral load as well as infectivity.

In this study, we critically revised and updated the checklist of native vascular plants of Mongolia. The checklist comprises 3,041 native vascular plant taxa (2,835 species and 206 infraspecific species) from 653 genera and 111 families, including 7 lycophytes, 41 ferns, 21 gymnosperms, and 2,972 angiosperms. In the angiosperms, we identified the 14 families with the greatest species richness, ranging from 50 to 456 taxa. Species endemism is also noted here; 102 taxa are endemic to Mongolia, and 275 taxa are sub-endemic that co-occur in adjacent countries. Since 2014, a total of 14 taxa have been described new to science based on morphological evidences. Moreover, five genera and 74 taxa were newly added to the flora of Mongolia. Based on our critical revisions, names of three families, 21 genera, and 230 species have been changed in comparison to the previous checklist, "Conspectus of the vascular plants of Mongolia" (2014).

SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has been recognized the causative agent of the recent and ongoing pandemic. Effective and specific antiviral agents or vaccines are still missing, despite a large plethora of compounds have been proposed and tested worldwide. New compounds are requested urgently and virtual screening can offer fast and robust predictions to investigate. Moreover, natural compounds were shown to exert antiviral effects and can be endowed with limited side effects and wide availability. Our approach consisted in the validation of a docking protocol able to refine the most suitable candidates, within the 31000 natural compounds of the natural product activity and species source (NPASS) library, interacting with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike glycoprotein. After the refinement process two natural compounds, castanospermine and karuquinone B, were shown to be the best-in-class derivatives in silico able to target an essential structure of the virus and to act in the early stage of infection.

The determination of natural products stereochemistry remains a formidable task. Residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) induced by anisotropic media are a powerful tool for determination of the stereochemistry of organic molecule in solution. This review will provide a short introduction on RDCs-based methodology for the structural elucidation of natural products. Special attention is given to the current availability of alignment media in organic solvents. The applications of RDCs for structural analysis of some examples of natural products were discussed and summarized. The risks imposed by novel insecticides, mainly bioinsecticides, are largely unknown despite their increased use and their perceived environmental safety, which is based on their natural origin. Furthermore, unlike honeybees, native pollinator species have received little attention. In the present study, the lethal and sublethal effects of the neonicotinoid imidacloprid and the bioinsecticide spinosad were assessed in the stingless bee species Meliponaquadrifasciata, an important native pollinator in the Neotropical region. The adult stingless bee workers exhibited high oral insecticide susceptibility, with LD50s of 23.54 and 12.07 ng a.i./bee for imidacloprid and spinosad, respectively. Imidacloprid also impaired worker respiration and overall group activity and flight, while spinosad significantly impaired only worker flight despite exhibiting higher oral toxicity to adult workers than imidacloprid. These findings indicate the hazardous nature not only of imidacloprid but also the bioinsecticide spinosad to adult workers of the native pollinator M. quadrifasciata. Therefore, bioinsecticides should not be exempted from risk assessment analysis due to their lethal and sublethal components.
