Alexa grandiflora Ducke is a papilionoid legume tree native to the Brazilian Amazon Forest. It belongs to the early-diverging Angylocalyx clade within the subfamily Papilionoideae, which is characterized by keel flowers, with some genera having flowers other than typical papilionaceous ones. This study describes the floral organography, organogenesis, and secretory structures of A. grandiflora and compares its floral morphology with that of three species from different genera within the Angylocalyx clade to deepen the understanding of the clade's floral structure and, by extension, the broader Papilionoideae subfamily. To conduct the study, floral buds and flowers from A. grandiflora were collected and processed for surface and anatomical studies, and flowers from herbarium specimens of Castanospermum australe, Xanthocercis madagascariensis and Angylocalyx oligophyllus to elucidate the clade's floral evolution and its implications for Papilionoideae diversity. Floral buds and flowers of A. grandiflora were analyzed using surface and anatomical techniques, while herbarium specimens of the comparative taxa were examined via scanning electron microscopy. In A. grandiflora, the apical meristem of the racemose inflorescence primary axis produces first-order bracts acropetally in a helical order. Sepal initiation is unidirectional, petal initiation is simultaneous, with the adaxial petal growing faster than the others. Antesepalous stamens appear simultaneously and concurrently with the carpel, while antepetalous stamens emerge simultaneously. Floral secretion of nectar, terpenes, and oleoresin supports phyllostomid bat pollination in Alexa species, consistent with the previously proposed association between intense nectar and terpene production and chiropterophily in the genus. Comparative analysis reveals that the Angylocalyx clade shares key floral traits, including a gamosepalous calyx, an enlarged adaxial petal, and similarly shaped lateral and abaxial petals. However, variations are observed in the type of inflorescence and in the level of insertion of the filament in the anther, highlighting the floral diversity within the clade.

Atractilina Dearn. & Barthol. and Spiropes Cif. are genera of asexual fungi that comprise species mainly hyperparasitic on black mildews (Meliolales, Ascomycota). Although a common group of anamorphic fungi, they have been described up to now only by morphology and their systematic position is unknown. The present study provides a morphological treatise of all known species of Atractilina and Spiropes hyperparasitic on Meliolales, including insights into their systematic position, based on DNA sequences generated here for the first time. The study was conducted, based on 33 herbarium specimens and 23 specimens recently collected in Benin and Panama. The obtained DNA sequence data (28S rDNA and ITS rDNA) of A.parasitica and of two species of Spiropes show systematic placements in the Dothideomycetes and Leotiomycetes, respectively. The sequence data of the two Spiropes spp. do not group together. Moreover, the anamorph-teleomorph connection between Atractilinaparasitica and Malacariameliolicola , a pseudothecioid fungus, is confirmed. Three species in the genus Spiropes are proposed as new to science, namely S.angylocalycis , S.carpolobiae and S.croissantiformis . Four species are reported for Benin for the first time, three species for Panama and one species for mainland America. Atractilina and Spiropes are currently two genera with highly heterogeneous species and they might have to be split in the future, once the taxonomic concepts are validated by morphology and molecular sequence data.

In response to national policy obligations, many mining companies in Ghana have restored/reclaimed degraded mined out sites through revegetation. The area extent of such restored areas is unknown and there is also paucity of data on success of restoration, species diversity and compositional dynamics of such restored landscapes, particularly using mixed species. This study assessed stand structure, diversity and composition dynamics of sites restored with mixed species and models species abundance distribution on these sites. Three reclaimed and one control site (adjacent natural forest) were inventoried using 27, 30 x 30 m plots on the Hwini-Butre and Benso concession of the Golden Star Wassa Limited. Overall 3057 (per 24 plots) and 150 (per 3 plots) individual trees were recorded in the overstorey of the reclaimed and control sites, respectively. In all, 31 species in 13 families occurred on the reclaimed site while 61 species in 29 families occurred on the control. Species richness, abundance and diversity were significantly lower in the reclaimed sites than the control in the overstorey (p≤0.018), mid-storey (p ≤ 0.032), and understorey (p≤ 0.031). Species composition of the reclaimed and control sites were mostly dissimilar in the overstorey, midstorey, and understorey. However, the midstorey and overstorey of the reclaimed sites showed high similarity in composition (Jaccard's index = 0.817). Pioneer and shade-tolerant species were most dominant in the understorey of the control while only shade-tolerant species (mostly herbs and grasses) dominated the reclaimed sites. Species abundance distribution of both reclaimed and control sites followed the geometric series model, indicating that both sites are disturbed but at different intensities. It is concluded that reclamation with mixed species does not necessarily lead to rapid restoration of indigenous climax species on mine spoils. Nonetheless, it may lead to accomplishments of short-term goals of stabilizing and protecting landscapes while conditioning the sites for colonisation of the climax species.

Dietary supplements cover a wide range of products, the most popular are those containing plant-based ingredients. Supplements are consumed by consumers of all ages as well as by both healthy and sick people. The lack of unified regulation in this sector increases the probability that supplements are poor chemical and microbiological quality and can be dangerous for patients. The aim of this paper is to highlight selected issues associated with the microbiological quality of dietary supplements containing plant materials. We focus on the most recent reports referring to bacterial and fungal contaminations as well as the presence of mycotoxins. Dietary supplements containing plant ingredients commonly show a variety of microbial contaminants, which might be crucial for consumer safety. They often contain microorganisms potentially pathogenic to humans. Metabolites produced by microorganisms may pose a threat to the health of consumers. Because of that, in this review, we emphasize the risk that may be associated with the lack of appropriate studies of the quality of the supplements.

A new lactam, oligoamide ( 1 ), along with three known compounds ( 2 - 4 ), stigmasterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside ( 2 ), formononetin ( 3 ) and (-)-pinitol ( 4 ) were isolated from the CH 2 Cl 2 /CH 3 OH (1:1) extract of the leaves of Angylocalyx oligophyllus by chromatographic separation. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis (UV, IR, MS, 1D, and 2D NMR). Compound 1 was found to have weak antioxidant and urease inhibitory potential.
