A biofilm is a collection of microorganisms organized in a matrix of extracellular polymeric material. Biofilms consist of microbial cells that attach to both surfaces and each other, whether they are living or non-living. These microbial biofilms can lead to hospital-acquired infections and are generally detrimental. They possess the ability to resist the human immune system and antibiotics. The National Institute of Health (NIH) states that biofilm formation is associated with 65% of all microbial illnesses and 80% of chronic illnesses. Additionally, non-device-related microbial biofilm infections include conditions like cystic fibrosis, otitis media, infective endocarditis, and chronic inflammatory disorders. This review aims to provide an overview of research on chronic infections caused by microbial biofilms, methods used for biofilm detection, recent approaches to combat biofilms, and future perspectives, including the development of innovative antimicrobial strategies such as antimicrobial peptides, bacteriophages, and agents that disrupt biofilms.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), by their very nature, are highly reactive, and it is no surprise that they can cause damage to organic molecules. In cells, ROS are produced as byproducts of many metabolic reactions, but plants are prepared for this ROS output. Even though extracellular ROS generation constitutes only a minor part of a cell's total ROS level, this fraction is of extraordinary importance. In an active apoplastic ROS burst, it is mainly the respiratory burst oxidases and peroxidases that are engaged, and defects of these enzymes can affect plant development and stress responses. It must be highlighted that there are also other less well-known enzymatic or non-enzymatic ROS sources. There is a need for ROS detoxification in the apoplast, and almost all cellular antioxidants are present in this space, but the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the concentration of low-mass antioxidants is very low. The low antioxidant efficiency in the apoplast allows ROS to accumulate easily, which is a condition for ROS signaling. Therefore, the apoplastic ROS/antioxidant homeostasis is actively engaged in the reception and reaction to many biotic and abiotic stresses.

A working checklist of accepted taxa worldwide is vital in achieving the goal of developing an online flora of all known plants by 2020 as part of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. We here present the first-ever worldwide checklist for liverworts (Marchantiophyta) and hornworts (Anthocerotophyta) that includes 7486 species in 398 genera representing 92 families from the two phyla. The checklist has far reaching implications and applications, including providing a valuable tool for taxonomists and systematists, analyzing phytogeographic and diversity patterns, aiding in the assessment of floristic and taxonomic knowledge, and identifying geographical gaps in our understanding of the global liverwort and hornwort flora. The checklist is derived from a working data set centralizing nomenclature, taxonomy and geography on a global scale. Prior to this effort a lack of centralization has been a major impediment for the study and analysis of species richness, conservation and systematic research at both regional and global scales. The success of this checklist, initiated in 2008, has been underpinned by its community approach involving taxonomic specialists working towards a consensus on taxonomy, nomenclature and distribution.

Background and aims Data are presented from 39 species of mosses and 16 liverworts for ratios of chlorophylls and total carotenoids, and light saturation of photosynthetic electron flow or photosynthetic CO2 uptake, in relation to the postulate that bryophyte cells in general show shade-plant characteristics. Methods Pigment concentrations were measured by spectrophotometer in 80 % acetone extracts. Light-saturation curves were constructed by (modulated) chlorophyll florescence and for some species by infra-red gas analysis. Key results The pigment measurements were widely variable but broadly in line with the findings of previous authors. Median values (mosses/liverworts) were: total chlorophyll, 1.64/3.76 mg g(-1); chlorophyll a : b, 2.29/1.99; chlorophylls : carotenoids, 4.74/6.75). The PPFD values at 95 % saturation (estimated from fitted curves) also ranged widely, but were almost all Conclusions Bryophytes include but are not inherently shade plants. Light-saturation levels for species of open sun-exposed habitats are lower than for vascular sun plants and are probably limited by CO2 diffusion into unistratose leaves; this limit can only be exceeded by bryophytes with ventilated photosynthetic tissues which provide increased area for CO2 uptake.

The PCR has been used to amplify a 2,181-bp ORF from Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2), designated SC9B1.20 (= SCO6073), encoding a protein of 726 amino acids and showing significant sequence similarity at the deduced amino acid level in both the N-terminal and C-terminal halves to the known sesquiterpene synthase pentalenene synthase. The full-length recombinant protein was expressed at high levels in Escherichia coli and shown to catalyze the Mg(2+)-dependent conversion of farnesyl diphosphate to the sesquiterpene alcohol (4S, 7R)-germacra-1 (10)E, 5E-diene-11-ol. The enzymatic cyclization had a k(cat) of 6.2 +/- 0.5 x 10(-3) s(-1) and a K(m) for farnesyl diphosphate of 62 +/- 8 nM. Expression of the N-terminal (366 amino acids) domain of the SC9B1.20 protein also gave a fully functional cyclase which converted farnesyl diphosphate to the identical sesquiterpene alcohol with a slightly lower k(cat) of 3.2 +/- 0.4 x 10(-3) s(-1) and a twofold greater k(m) of 115 +/- 14 nM. By contrast, the expressed C-terminal domain of SC9B1.20 had no farnesyl diphosphate cyclase activity. The formation of the germacradienol seems to be the committed step in the formation of geosmin, the characteristic odoriferous constituent of Streptomyces species.
