Due to the importance of the production of functional and nutraceutical foods with high added value, Shekartighal was used to develop ready-made functional mayonnaise-type sauces and evaluate their physicochemical, sensory, and antioxidant properties over 60 days of storage. Shekartighal had, on average, 76.85% carbohydrate, 9.24% protein, 4.91% fat, 1.74% ash, 7.26% moisture, 20.38 mgGAE/g total phenol content, 14.31 μM ferrous sulphate/g, and 145.12 μg/mL antioxidant activity. The results indicated that Shekartighal had high water absorption capacity (408.01%) and emulsion stability (91.83%). Following the textural and sensorial study, the product that stood out as the best performer was the sauce containing 3% Shekartighal. Consequently, this product was selected for further evaluation, where its physicochemical and antioxidant properties were assessed for a 60-day duration under refrigerated storage (4°C). The formulation with 3% Shekartighal presented significantly more phenolic content and antioxidant properties than the control. During the 60-day refrigerated storage (4°C) period, the physicochemical and antioxidant parameters of the enriched sauce remained stable. The addition of Shekartighal to the sauce significantly improved its nutritional quality, and the sauce enriched with 3% Shekartighal demonstrated the most favorable characteristics among the different concentrations tested. Overall, these findings suggest that Shekartighal could be utilized as a natural ingredient to create a functional sauce with notable antioxidant and nutritional properties.

Various fruit and vegetable wastes, particularly peels, seeds, pulp, and unprocessed residues from the food industry, are abundant sources of antioxidants and essential antimicrobial agents. These valuable bioactive compounds recovered from the food industry have a great application in food, agriculture, medicine, and pharmacology. Food-derived natural antimicrobials offer advantages such as diminishing microbial loads and prolonging the shelf life of food products particularly prone to microbial spoilage. They not only enrich the foods with antioxidants but also help prevent microbial contamination, thereby prolonging their shelf life. Similarly, incorporating these natural antimicrobials into food packaging products extends the shelf life of meat products. Moreover, in agricultural practices, these natural antimicrobials act as eco-friendly pesticides, eliminating phytopathogenic microbes responsible for causing plant diseases. In medicine and pharmacology, they are being explored as potential therapeutic agents. This review article is based on current studies conducted in the last four years, evaluating the effectiveness of food-based natural antimicrobials in food, agriculture, medicine, and pharmacology.

Yogurt is a popular dairy product and its consumption has been progressively growing over the past few decades by raising consumers' health-consciousness. As yogurt is growing in popularity, manufacturers are continuously seeking for bioactive components such as probiotics and prebiotics, to produce functional yogurt with more beneficial health effects. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of Malva neglecta (MN, 0, 5, 10 and 15%) and lactulose (0, 1 and 2%) as prebiotic substances on survival of Lactobacillus fermentum in a half-fat synbiotic stirred yogurt. The results revealed that with increasing MN and lactulose concentrations, the count of Lb. fermentum significantly increased ( p p < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy assessment shown that addition of MN and lactulose resulted in a higher moisture retention in the void spaces. The results revealed that by incorporating lactulose and MN in yogurt formulation, an appropriate synbiotic yogurt could be produced as a novel functional product.

Habitat losses occur non-randomly within human-modified landscapes, resulting in high spatial heterogeneity of local habitat histories. Although local habitat history can modulate the existence of extinction debt (i.e., the number of populations predicted to become extinct) in a landscape, its role in detecting extinction debt has not been examined explicitly. We aimed to compare the detectability of extinction debt among populations of an endangered semi-natural grassland species, Echinops setifer (Compositae), in the grassland landscape of Mt. Aso, Japan. We classified populations into three groups that differed in local habitat history: stable (habitat loss ≤30% since the 1930s), moderately decreased (30% 90%). We then evaluated whether the effects of habitat areas during the 1930s and 2000s varied among groups to explain population size by GLMMs and estimated coefficient of explanatory variable by Bayesian MCMC methods. Within the groups, stable group showed significant positive relationships with both past and current habitat areas. The moderately decreased group only showed significant positive relationships with past habitat areas, indicating the existence of extinction debt in these populations. The severely decreased group only showed significant positive relationships with current habitat areas, indicating that they may have already paid their extinction debt because the rate of grassland loss exceeded the extinction threshold. Even within the same landscape, extinction debt varied in response to local habitat history. In spatially heterogeneous landscapes, evaluation of effects of local habitat history can elucidate the habitat-based extinction risks for plant populations.

Background Malagasy tenrecs belong to the Afrotherian clade of placental mammals and comprise three subfamilies divided in eight genera (Tenrecinae: Tenrec, Echinops, Setifer and Hemicentetes; Oryzorictinae: Oryzorictes, Limnogale and Microgale; Geogalinae:Geogale). The diversity of their morphology and incomplete taxon sampling made it difficult until now to resolve phylogenies based on either morphology or molecular data for this group. Therefore, in order to delineate the evolutionary history of this family, phylogenetic and dating analyses were performed on a four nuclear genes dataset (ADRA2B, AR, GHR and vWF) including all Malagasy tenrec genera. Moreover, the influence of both taxon sampling and data partitioning on the accuracy of the estimated ages were assessed. Results Within Afrotheria the vast majority of the nodes received a high support, including the grouping of hyrax with sea cow and the monophyly of both Afroinsectivora (Macroscelidea + Afrosoricida) and Afroinsectiphillia (Tubulidentata + Afroinsectivora). Strongly supported relationships were also recovered among all tenrec genera, allowing us to firmly establish the grouping of Geogale with Oryzorictinae, and to confirm the previously hypothesized nesting of Limnogale within the genus Microgale. The timeline of Malagasy tenrec diversification does not reflect a fast adaptive radiation after the arrival on Madagascar, indicating that morphological specializations have appeared over the whole evolutionary history of the family, and not just in a short period after colonization. In our analysis, age estimates at the root of a clade became older with increased taxon sampling of that clade. Moreover an augmentation of data partitions resulted in older age estimates as well, whereas standard deviations increased when more extreme partition schemes were used. Conclusion Our results provide as yet the best resolved gene tree comprising all Malagasy tenrec genera, and may lead to a revision of tenrec taxonomy. A timeframe of tenrec evolution built on the basis of this solid phylogenetic framework showed that morphological specializations of the tenrecs may have been affected by environmental changes caused by climatic and/or subsequent colonization events. Analyses including various taxon sampling and data partitions allow us to point out some possible pitfalls that may lead to biased results in molecular dating; however, further analyses are needed to corroborate these observations.
