Presently, there has been an increase in the consumption of the blue-green microalga-spirulina ( Arthrospira species), which dominates 99.5% of the total world production of microalgae. Primarily sold as a dietary supplement, it is also incorporated into snacks, pasta, cookies, and bread. Owing to its nutrient abundance, spirulina has a variety of potential applications. Extensive studies have been conducted on the health benefits of spirulina, but its safety in terms of allergy has received limited attention. Therefore, to bridge this knowledge deficit, this review aimed to evaluate the allergenic and antiallergic potential of spirulina. In the PubMed and Scopus databases using words related to allergy, we attempted to detect papers on hypersensitivity to spirulina. A total of 128 records were identified, of which 49 were screened. Ultimately, in this review, we analyzed four case studies, encompassing a total of five patients with allergies to spirulina. We assessed the severity of allergic reactions following World Allergy Organization (WAO) Anaphylaxis Guidance 2020, which varied from mild (grade 2) to severe (grade 4) based on the patient's symptoms. Additionally, our findings indicate that allergy to spirulina is not commonly reported or diagnosed. However, most of the described cases (four of five) regarding allergy to spirulina according to WAO Anaphylaxis Guidance 2020 were classified as anaphylaxis. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that spirulina also possesses antiallergic properties, as evidenced by research studies. Our article delves into both the allergic and antiallergic potential of spirulina.

Lichens exist in an organismal organization of mycobiont, photobiont, and non-photoautotrophic bacteria. These organisms contribute to the growth of lichens even in poor nutrition substrates. However, studies on the isolation and application of non-photoautotrophic bacteria in plant growth and biocontrol are scanty. Therefore, a study was conducted to isolate and evaluate the potential of non-photoautotrophic bacteria from lichen tissues in maize plant growth promotion and biocontrol of plant pathogens (fungi and bacteria). Five bacterial strains were isolated and tested for their ability to produce indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA). One bacterium named YZCUO202005 produced IAA, siderophores and biofilms, solubilized phosphate and potassium and exhibited extracellular enzymes (cellulases, proteases, amylase, and β -1,3-Glucanase). Based on the 16S rRNA sequence analysis results, YZCUO202005 was identified as Bacillus licheniformis . The strain inhibited the growth of five pathogenic fungi with an inhibition percent of between 58.7% and 71.7% and two pathogenic bacteria. Under greenhouse conditions, YZCUO202005 was tested for its abilities to enhance maize seed germination, and vegetative growth. Compared with the control treatment, the strain significantly enhanced the growth of stem length (i.e. 18 ± 0.64 cm, 78 ± 0.92 cm), leaf length (i.e. 10 ± 0.36 cm, 57 ± 1.42 cm), leaf chlorophyll levels (i.e., 13 ± 0.40, 40 ± 0.43 SPAD), and root length (i.e, 9.8 ± 2.25 cm, 22.5 ± 6.59 cm). Our results demonstrated that B. licheniformis YZCUO202005 from lichens has the potential to promote plant growth and reduce fungal and bacterial pathogens' growth. Furthermore, the results suggest that lichens are naturally rich sources of plant growth promotion and biocontrol agents that would be used in agriculture.

Epidithiodioxopiperazine alkaloids possess an astonishing array of molecular architecture and generally exhibit potent biological activity. Nearly twenty distinct families have been isolated and characterized since the seminal discovery of gliotoxin in 1936. Numerous biosynthetic investigations offer a glimpse at the relative ease with which Nature is able to assemble this class of molecules, while providing synthetic chemists inspiration for the development of more efficient syntheses. Herein, we discuss the isolation and characterization, proposed fungal biogeneses, and total syntheses of epidithiodioxopiperazines.

Introduction The use of unlicensed food and herbal supplements to enhance sexual functions is drastically increasing. This phenomenon, combined with the availability of these products over the Internet, represents a challenge from a clinical and a public health perspective. Methods A comprehensive multilingual assessment of websites, drug fora, and other online resources was carried out between February and July 2013 with exploratory qualitative searches including 203 websites. Additional searches were conducted using the Global Public Health Intelligence Network (GPHIN). Once the active constitutes of the products were identified, a comprehensive literature search was carried out using PsycInfo and PubMed. Results The most common sexual enhancement products available on the Internet were identified. Their active ingredients included yohimbine, maca, horny goat weed and Ginkgo biloba. These four substances were reported with the occurrence of adverse events and the induction of psychological symptoms, such as mood changes, anxiety, and hallucinations as well as addictive behaviours. Conclusions Uncontrolled availability of sexual enhancement products that contain potentially harmful substances is a major public health concern. The possible impact on population health, particularly among subjects with psychiatric disorders, usually at risk for sexual dysfunction, may be significant. This new trend needs to be extensively studied and monitored.

Scabrosin esters (SEs), which have been recently isolated from the lichen Xanthoparmelia scabrosa, belong to the epipolythiodioxopiperazine (ETP) class of secondary metabolites characterized by possession of a reactive disulfide bond. Colony forming assays show that these toxins are active against human tumor cell lines at nanomolar concentrations. Other members of the ETP class of toxins such as gliotoxin have been shown to induce apoptosis in cells, although the cellular target(s) of the ETP toxins is currently unknown. ETP toxins have been shown to inhibit a variety of enzymes via interaction with sensitive cysteine residues. Here we show that the typical scabrosin ester acetate butyrate induces early mitochondrial membrane hyperpolarization assessed by JC-1 staining accompanied by apoptotic cell death. The toxin lowers ATP in intact cells and inhibits the rate of ATP synthesis in permeabilzed cells. Comparison with the effects of the known ATP synthase inhibitor oligomycin B is consistent with ATP synthase as an early target in scabrosin ester-induced cell death.
