Natural ingredients have been used for centuries for skin treatment and care. Interest in the health effects of plants has recently increased due to their safety and applicability in the formulation of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Long-known plant materials as well as newly discovered ones are increasingly being used in natural products of plant origin. This review highlights the beneficial effects of plants and plant constituents on the skin, including moisturizing (e.g., Cannabis sativa , Hydrangea serrata , Pradosia mutisii and Carthamus tinctorius ), anti-aging (e.g., Aegopodium podagraria , Euphorbia characias , Premna odorata and Warburgia salutaris ), antimicrobial (e.g., Betula pendula and Epilobium angustifolium ), antioxidant (e.g., Kadsura coccinea , Rosmarinus officinalis , Rubus idaeus and Spatholobus suberectus ), anti-inflammatory (e.g., Antidesma thwaitesianum , Helianthus annuus , Oenanthe javanica , Penthorum chinense , Ranunculus bulumei and Zanthoxylum bungeanum ), regenerative (e.g., Aloe vera , Angelica polymorpha , Digitaria ciliaris , Glycyrrihza glabra and Marantodes pumilum ), wound healing (e.g., Agrimonia eupatoria , Astragalus floccosus , Bursera morelensis , Jatropha neopauciflora and Sapindus mukorossi ), photoprotective (e.g., Astragalus gombiformis , Calea fruticose , Euphorbia characias and Posoqueria latifolia ) and anti-tyrosinase activity (e.g., Aerva lanata , Bruguiera gymnorhiza , Dodonaea viscosa , Lonicera japonica and Schisandra chinensis ), as well as their role as excipients in cosmetics (coloring (e.g., Beta vulgaris , Centaurea cyanus , Hibiscus sabdariffa and Rubia tinctiorum ), protective and aromatic agents (e.g., Hyssopus officinalis , Melaleuca alternifolia , Pelargonium graveolens and Verbena officinalis )).

The rising predominance of type 2 diabetes, combined with the poor medical effects seen with commercially available anti-diabetic medications, has motivated the development of innovative treatment approaches for regulating postprandial glucose levels. Natural carbohydrate digestion enzyme inhibitors might be a viable option for blocking dietary carbohydrate absorption with fewer side effects than manufactured medicines. Alpha-amylase is a metalloenzyme that facilitates digestion by breaking down polysaccharides into smaller molecules such as maltose and maltotriose. It also contributes to elevated blood glucose levels and postprandial hyperglycemia. As a result, scientists are being urged to target α-amylase and create inhibitors that can slow down the release of glucose from carbohydrate chains and prolong its absorption, thereby resulting in lower postprandial plasma glucose levels. Natural α-amylase inhibitors derived from plants have gained popularity as safe and cost-effective alternatives. The bioactive components responsible for the inhibitory actions of various plant extracts have been identified through phytochemical research, paving the way for further development and application. The majority of the findings, however, are based on in vitro investigations. Only a few animal experiments and very few human investigations have confirmed these findings. Despite some promising results, additional investigation is needed to develop feasible anti-diabetic drugs based on plant-derived pancreatic α-amylase inhibitors. This review summarizes the most recent findings from research on plant-derived pancreatic α-amylase inhibitors, including plant extracts and plant-derived bioactive compounds. Furthermore, it offers insights into the structural aspects of the crucial therapeutic target, α-amylases, in addition to their interactions with inhibitors.

Arbutin, a hydroquinone glucoside, has been detected in ca. 50 plant families, especially in the plants of the Asteraceae, Ericaceae, Proteaceae and Rosaceae families. It is one of the most widely used natural skin-whitening agents. In addition to its skin whitening property, arbutin possesses other therapeutically relevant biological properties, e.g., antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, as well as anticancer potential. This review presents, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of the distribution of arbutin in the plant kingdom and critically appraises its therapeutic potential as an anticancer agent based on the literature published until the end of August 2022, accessed via several databases, e.g., Web of Science, Science Direct, Dictionary of Natural Products, PubMed and Google Scholar. The keywords used in the search were arbutin, cancer, anticancer, distribution and hydroquinone. Published outputs suggest that arbutin has potential anticancer properties against bladder, bone, brain, breast, cervix, colon, liver, prostate and skin cancers and a low level of acute or chronic toxicity.

We previously reported the neuroprotective effects of (+)-balasubramide derived compound 3C, but its action on atherosclerosis in vivo remains unknown. The study was designed to investigate the potential effects of 3C on atherogenesis and explore the possible underlying mechanisms. 3C ameliorated high-fat diet-induced body weight gain, hyperlipidemia, and atherosclerotic plaque burden in apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE -/- ) mice after 10 weeks of treatment. 3C suppressed the expression of genes involved in triglyceride synthesis in liver. 3C prevented aortic inflammation as evidenced by reduction of adhesive molecule levels and macrophage infiltration. Mechanistic studies revealed that activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is central to the athero-protective effects of 3C. Increased AMPK activity by 3C resulted in suppressing interferon-γ (IFN-γ) induced activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription-1 (STAT1) and stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathways and downstream pro-inflammatory markers. Moreover, 3C inhibited ox-LDL triggered lipid accumulation and IFN-γ induced phenotypic switch toward M1 macrophage in RAW 264.7 cells. Our present data suggest that 3C prevents atherosclerosis via pleiotropic effects, including amelioration of lipid profiles, vascular inflammation and macrophage pro-inflammatory phenotype. 3C has the potential to be developed as a promising drug for atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular disease.

Leishmania mexicana is one of the pathogens causing cutaneous leishmaniasis which is associated with patient morbidity. In our researches for new safe and effective treatments, thirty-seven essential oils (EOs) extracted from Vietnamese plants were screened in vitro for the first time on Leishmania mexicana mexicana (Lmm) promastigotes at the maximum concentration of 50 nL/mL. Active EOs were also analyzed for cytotoxicity on mammalian cell lines (WI38, J774) and their selectivity indices (SI) were calculated. Their composition was determined by GC-MS and GC-FID. Our results indicated that EOs extracted from Cinnamomum cassia , Zingiber zerumbet , Elsholtzia ciliata and Amomum aromaticum , possessed a moderate anti-leishmanial activity, with IC 50 values of 2.92 ± 0.08, 3.34 ± 0.34, 8.49 ± 0.32 and 9.25 ± 0.64 nL/mL respectively. However, they also showed cytotoxicity with SI Ocimum gratissimum , displaying an IC 50 of 4.85 ± 1.65 nL/mL and SI > 10. It contained 86.5% eugenol, which was demonstrated to be effective on Lmm with IC 50 of 2.57 ± 0.57 nL/mL and not toxic on mammalian cells, explaining the observed activity.
