Traits of seeds are far less-studied than those of vegetative plants, despite the importance of this stage in a plant's life cycle. Much research has demonstrated the importance of certain aspects of seed phenotype, including both chemical and physical traits, to survival in the face of biotic and abiotic selective pressures. One trait with demonstrated physiological and defensive functionality is seed mucilage. This persistent hydrogel coating on the surface of the seed is extremely common and found in thousands of species across angiosperms, with many independent evolutionary origins. Despite attention in taxonomic, floristic, ecological, and biomaterial investigations for over a century, and the economic importance of products derived from this mucilage, the trait is often overlooked, and protocols for the labs determining seed mucilage across plants vary. Here, in response to a paper claiming seed mucilage in many new species due to flawed methodology, we lay out specific protocols to determine the presence of mucilage, in an effort to standardize across studies. We hope these methods prove useful in both evaluating the current literature and permit cross-study comparisons to advance the study of this important trait.

Selenium (Se) is a microelement that plays an important nutrient role by influencing various physiological and biochemical traits in plants. It has been shown to stimulate plant metabolism, enhancing secondary metabolites and lowering abiotic and biotic stress in plants. Globally, the enormous applications of nanotechnology in the food and agricultural sectors have vastly expanded. Nanoselenium is more active than bulk materials, and various routes of synthesis of Se nanoparticles (Se-NPs) have been reported in which green synthesis using plants is more attractive due to a reduction in ecological issues and an increase in biological activities. The Se-NP-based biofortification is more significant because it increases plant stress tolerance and positively impacts their metabolism. Se-NPs can enhance plant resistance to various oxidative stresses, promote growth, enhance soil nutrient status, enhance plant antioxidant levels, and participate in the transpiration process. Additionally, they use a readily available, biodegradable reducing agent and are ecologically friendly. This review concentrates on notable information on the different modes of Se-NPs' synthesis and characterization, their applications in plant growth, yield, and stress tolerance, and their influence on the metabolic process.

In this study, we critically revised and updated the checklist of native vascular plants of Mongolia. The checklist comprises 3,041 native vascular plant taxa (2,835 species and 206 infraspecific species) from 653 genera and 111 families, including 7 lycophytes, 41 ferns, 21 gymnosperms, and 2,972 angiosperms. In the angiosperms, we identified the 14 families with the greatest species richness, ranging from 50 to 456 taxa. Species endemism is also noted here; 102 taxa are endemic to Mongolia, and 275 taxa are sub-endemic that co-occur in adjacent countries. Since 2014, a total of 14 taxa have been described new to science based on morphological evidences. Moreover, five genera and 74 taxa were newly added to the flora of Mongolia. Based on our critical revisions, names of three families, 21 genera, and 230 species have been changed in comparison to the previous checklist, "Conspectus of the vascular plants of Mongolia" (2014).

Abiotic stress in plants is a crucial issue worldwide, especially heavy-metal contaminants, salinity, and drought. These stresses may raise a lot of issues such as the generation of reactive oxygen species, membrane damage, loss of photosynthetic efficiency, etc. that could alter crop growth and developments by affecting biochemical, physiological, and molecular processes, causing a significant loss in productivity. To overcome the impact of these abiotic stressors, many strategies could be considered to support plant growth including the use of nanoparticles (NPs). However, the majority of studies have focused on understanding the toxicity of NPs on aquatic flora and fauna, and relatively less attention has been paid to the topic of the beneficial role of NPs in plants stress response, growth, and development. More scientific attention is required to understand the behavior of NPs on crops under these stress conditions. Therefore, the present work aims to comprehensively review the beneficial roles of NPs in plants under different abiotic stresses, especially heavy metals, salinity, and drought. This review provides deep insights about mechanisms of abiotic stress alleviation in plants under NP application.

Background Aiweixin (AWX) is a traditional Uyghur medicine prescription, and has been mainly used to treat heart and brain diseases for a long time. Previous studies indicated that AWX had therapeutic effects in a rat model of myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury. In this study, we investigate whether AWX has protective effects against chromium toxicity in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Methods The AWX decoction was the conventional product for clinical use. It was added into M9 buffer in a certain volume for the treatment to the wild-type C. elegans and mutational worms, daf-16, glp-1(notch), daf-2, rsks-1 and eat-2. Assays for hexavalent chromium {Cr(VI)} stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were used. Results We found that AWX at moderate contents (0.083, 0.1, 0.125 volume of AWX/total volume) increased resistance of C. elegans to Cr(VI) exposure, although higher contents of AWX are toxic for C. elegans. The protective effect of AWX was DAF-16-dependent, but independent on the DAF-2, GLP-1, RSKS-1 and EAT-2. AWX (0.1 volume of AWX/total volume) significantly reduced ROS production of C. elegans induced by Cr(VI) exposure. Conclusion These results indicated the AWX protected against the toxicity of Cr(VI) in C. elegans, and the oxidative stress protective mechanism in worms should be involved.
