About 70 y after the first report by Yosio Kobayasi, we collected a little-known synnematous hyphomycete, Hymenostilbe mycetophila , on decaying basidiocarps of Favolaschia nipponica growing on dead culms of two bamboo species in Tateyama (on Sasa kurilensis ), Chichibu (type locality of H. mycetophila ; on Sasamorpha borealis ), and Shigakogen (on S. kurilensis ) in Japan, and obtained isolates of both the parasite and its host. Kobayasi provided only brief Latin and Japanese descriptions and quite elementary illustrations for H. mycetophila , without depositing any herbarium specimens including the holotype. In this paper, a lectotype and an epitype of this species are designated respectively from the original protolog (illustration) of Kobayasi and our new material collected in Chichibu. Phialidic conidiogenesis and 2- to 3-level verticillate conidiophores terminating in a whorl of 2-5 phialides were newly observed in this fungus on the natural substrate. ITS-LSU sequences of five isolates of H. mycetophila collected in the three locations were identical. Phylogenetic analyses of these markers placed H. mycetophila in Leotiales , although other species of Hymenostilbe are classified in Hypocreales at present. A new genus Kobayasiyomyces for H. mycetophila and a new combination, K. mycetophilus , are proposed here based on our morphological, ecological and phylogenetic data.

Species within Tetraplosphaeriaceae have been frequently documented in recent years with the extensive investigations of microfungi along a latitudinal gradient from north to south in the Asian/Australian region. Both bamboo substrates and freshwater habitats serve as extensive reservoirs, hosting a rich diversity of fungi that exhibit broad geographical distributions. The most common fungi in these two environments are generally distributed in distinct families. However, our statistics have revealed an intriguingly distinct preference of Tetraplosphaeriaceae species for inhabiting both bamboo substrates and freshwater habitats. The genera Pseudotetraploa (100%) and Triplosphaeria (100%) exhibit a strong preference, followed by Shrungabeeja (71%) and Quadricrura (67%). Our taxonomic and phylogenetic study of microfungi in southern China have identified four additional novel species, viz., Aquatisphaeria bambusae sp. nov., Pseudotetraploa phyllostachydis sp. nov., Pseudotetraploa yangjiangensis sp. nov., and Tetraploa submersa sp. nov. from bamboo substrates and freshwater habitats. In addition, Aquatisphaeria thailandica has previously been documented from freshwater habitats in Thailand; however, we have once again isolated this species from decaying bamboo substrates in Guangdong, China. The new findings substantiate our hypothesis that the preference of Tetraplosphaeriaceae species for colonizing bamboo substrates and freshwater habitats will be more evident through more extensive investigations conducted in such environments.

Biological invasion of aphids and other insects has been increased due to long distance commercial transportation of plant material. The bamboo-aphid-parasitoid association is strictly specific and even though it does not develop interactions with the local environment it should be listed as part of the fauna of southwestern Europe. On-going research regarding aphids and their aphidiine parasitoids in Spain has yielded a new association of Trioxys liui Chou & Chou, 1993 with an undescribed species of Takecallis aphids on bamboo, Phyllostachys spp. Here we present the first association of T. liui with aphids of the genus Takecallis that attack bamboos. Trioxys liui is known as a parasitoid of Cranaphis formosana (Takahashi, 1924) and Phyllaphoides bambusicola Takahashi, 1921 on bamboos in China and Russia. The accidental introduction of this parasitoid species to southwestern Europe has been probably realized through transportation of contaminated bamboo plant material. In the current study, a new host association is recorded for T. liui . Its potential to invade other bamboo-associated aphids and the significance of the tritrophic bamboo-aphid-parasitoid interactions in the new environments are also discussed.
