Premise of the study Identifying roots to species is challenging, but is a common problem in ecology. Fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphisms (FAFLPs) can distinguish species within a mixed sample, are high throughput, and are inexpensive. To broaden the use of this tool across ecosystems, unique size profiles must be established for species, and its limits identified. Methods Fragments of three noncoding cpDNA regions were used to create size profiles for 193 species common to the western Canadian boreal forest. We compared detection success among congeners using FAFLPs and Sanger sequencing of the trnL intron. We also simulated and experimentally created communities to test the influence of species richness, cpDNA regions used, and extraction/amplification biases on detection success. Results Of the 193 species, 54% had unique size profiles. This value decreased when fewer cpDNA regions were used. In simulated communities, ambiguous species identifications were positively related to the species richness of the community. In mock communities, some species evaded detection owing to poor extraction or amplification. Sequencing did not increase detection success compared to FAFLPs for a subset of 24 species across nine genera. Discussion We recommend FAFLPs are best suited to confirm rather than discover species occurring belowground.

Understanding how invasive plants may alter predator avoidance behaviors is important for granivorous rodents because their foraging can trigger ripple effects in trophic webs. Previous research has shown that European beach grass Ammophila arenaria, an invasive species in coastal California, affects the predation of other seeds by the rodents Microtus californicus, Peromyscus maniculatus, and Reithrodontomys megalotis. This may be due to lower perceived predation risk by rodents foraging in close proximity to the cover provided by Ammophila, but this mechanism has not yet been tested. We examined the perceived predation risk of rodents by measuring the 'giving up density' of food left behind in experimental patches of food in areas with and without abundant cover from Ammophila and under varying amount of moonlight. We found strong evidence that giving up density was lower in the thick uniform vegetation on Ammophila-dominated habitat than it was in the more sparsely and diversely vegetated restored habitat. There was also evidence that moonlight affected giving up density and that it mediated the effects of habitat, although with our design we were unable to distinguish the effects of lunar illumination and moon phase. Our findings illustrate that foraging rodents, well known to be risk-averse during moonlit nights, are also affected by the presence of an invasive plant. This result has implications for granivory and perhaps plant demography in invaded and restored coastal habitats. Future research in this system should work to unravel the complex trophic links formed by a non-native invasive plant (i.e., Ammophila) providing cover favored by native rodents, which likely forage on and potentially limit the recruitment of native and non-native plants, some of which have ecosystem consequences of their own.

The Gwich’in, which belong to the Athapaskan language group of Native Americans live in the borderland between Alaska and Canada. We analyzed 29 medicinal plants of this tribe for their growth inhibitory activity against CCRF-CEM T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) cells. The anti-leukemic activity of these plants has not been investigated as yet. Considering the poor cure rates of some ALL forms, there might be a great potential for medicinal plants as resource for natural products to treat T-ALL. We found that the hexane extracts of three plants revealed considerable growth inhibition on CCRF-CEM cells. The 50% inhibition concentrations (IC50) were 6.63 ± 0.03 µg/ml for Cladina mitis, 8.65 ± 0.38 µg/ml for Picea mariana (needles), and 9.67 ± 1.36 µg/ml for Artemisia frigida. Further investigations are required to isolate the active constituents of these plants.
